Infant Frenectomy
An infant frenectomy (sometimes called a tongue-tie release) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove or modify a restrictive frenulum, the small fold of tissue under the tongue or connecting the lips to the gums. At Peters Family Dentistry, we use advanced (Fotana) laser technology as an alternative to traditional methods using scalpels or scissors, offering numerous benefits.
Benefits of Fotana Laser Frenectomy
Minimally Invasive
The procedure is highly precise, targeting only the necessary tissue and minimizing damage to surrounding areas.
No Sutures (Stitches)
The laser often eliminates the need for stitches, which is particularly beneficial for infants and anxious patients.
Reduced Bleeding & Pain
The laser cauterizes (seals) blood vessels and nerve endings as it works, resulting in minimal bleeding during and after the procedure and less post-operative pain.
Lower Risk of Infection
The laser's bacteria-killing properties help maintain a sterile surgical environment, reducing the risk of post-treatment infections.
Faster Healing & Recovery
Patients often experience quicker healing times and can resume normal activities within 24-48 hours.
Improved Function
The goal of the procedure is to improve tongue or lip mobility, which can resolve issues with breastfeeding (in infants), speech, and overall oral function in children and adults.
Procedure Overview
The procedure is typically completed in a single dental office visit and generally follows these steps:
Consultation: A thorough assessment by a qualified professional (dentist, pediatrician, or specialist) determines if a frenectomy is necessary.
1
Anesthesia: Local or topical anesthesia is applied to ensure patient comfort during the procedure.
2
Laser Application: The Fotona laser is used to precisely ablate (remove) the restrictive frenulum tissue.
3
Post-Procedure Care: Follow our instructions for post-operative care, which may include exercises to strengthen muscles and prevent tissue reattachment.
